Whistle-Blower and Former Intelligence Officer
Launched a global debate on privacy after revealing NSA mass surveillance programs

Edward Snowden is a former American intelligence officer responsible for revealing documents that provided a public window into the National Security Agency and its international intelligence partners’ secret mass surveillance programs and capabilities. These revelations generated unprecedented attention around the world on privacy intrusions and digital security, leading to a global debate on the issue.

Snowden held various roles within the U.S. intelligence community, including that of a network security technician for the Central Intelligence Agency under diplomatic cover in Geneva. He most recently worked for the NSA, through a Booz Allen Hamilton contract.

With the United States pursuing his extradition, Snowden now is in Russia, where he was formally granted a three-year residency beginning Aug. 1, 2014, after a year of temporary asylum in Russia had ended. Snowden's Russian lawyer reported that permit has been extended three years, until 2020.
